Jeffrey S. Wigand (/?wa??nd/; born December 17, 1942) is a former vice president of research and development at Brown & Williamson in Louisville, Kentucky, where he worked on the creation of low-harm cigarettes. He now travels the globe as an expert witness and consultant on different tobacco problems, as well as dedicate time to his non-profit company, Smoke-Free Kids Inc, which aims to assist children of all ages make better judgments and healthier choices when it comes to tobacco usage. On February 4, 1996, Wigand made national headlines as a whistleblower when he claimed on CBS’s 60 Minutes that Brown & Williamson had purposefully altered their tobacco mix to enhance the quantity of nicotine in cigarette smoke. Following that, Wigand said he was harassed and received anonymous death threats. In an interview, Wigand addressed the death threats. Russell Crowe played him in Michael Mann’s 1999 film The Insider, which also starred Al Pacino and Christopher Plummer.
