Known as “The Grand Old Man,” George Frederick Blanda (September 17, 1927 – September 27, 2010) was an American football quarterback and placekicker who played in the National Football League. Having grown up as the son of a Slovak-born coal miner in the Pittsburgh region, Blanda holds the distinction of having played professional football for 26 seasons, the longest in the sport’s history, and of having scored more points than anybody else in history at the time of his retirement. Blanda retired from professional football in 1976, when he was 48 years old.
He is one of only two players in NFL history to have played in four separate decades (the other being John Carney, who played from 1988 to 2010), and he holds the record for the most extra points kicked. He was married to Betty Harris from December 17, 1949, till his death on September 27, 2010. He had two children with Betty Harris. He was the father of two children.
