D. Deacon Jones (December 9, 1938 – June 3, 2013) was an American football defensive end who played for the Los Angeles Rams, San Diego Chargers, and Washington Redskins in the National Football League. He was born in Los Angeles, California, and grew up in San Diego, California. In 1980, he became the first African-American to be inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame. In Jones’s career, he specialised in quarterback “sacks,” which he called himself. Jones, often known as “the Secretary of Defense,” is widely regarded as one of the best defensive players in history. Former Redskins head coach George Allen referred to Jones as the “Greatest Defensive End of Modern Football,” according to the Los Angeles Times. Jones was named the “Most Valuable Ram of All Time.”
